CIBCUS IS, IB TOWN
Small Boys Were All Up
Early to Greet Big Show.
' * *_ ■ .j
Sincerely and enthusiastically wel
comed by hordes of ubiquitous sma|l
boys and an an army of grown-ups, the
Barnum & Bailey circus, which came
to town early this morning and es
tablished its temporary home, paraded
^through the city this morning and
furnished Joy and happiness for the
populace. The streets through which
the procession passed were alive with
humanity, and there was another jam
a.t the circus grounds this afternoon.
.Those of mature age, who, it is said,
: always become young again at the re
newal of sights and sounds of the
great epochal period—the first circus
•—lined the curbs and crowded over one
another to get nearer the caravansary
x^ as it approached.
i The real rush took place along the
line of march in the down town dis
trict. The ‘little ones were carried
along and given the place of honor s®
they could witness .the unfolding
new delights. It was perfect circus
weather, and the parade left the
grounds on schedule time.
, The procession of floats, animals,
Charioteers and clowns took 40 minutes !
to pass a given point. The wagon !
cages contained the animals from the
menageries, and, unlike'the usual pa
; rade, the animals were to be seen by
• the crowd in their corrals. The
triumphal cars, with gold leaf trim
mingsf'&parkled in the bright sunlight..
Eighth-hundred men and jvomen ap
~—peared either on horseback or on the
cars and floats attired in costumes
representing characters such as Egyp
tians, Phoenicians and Sabacians.
Among the features of the parade
were a troupe of trumpeters, and a
number of chariots of allegorical sig
nificance highly embellished in gold,
relief, a body of knights in tournament
array, a herd of 30 odd elephants, a
caravan of as many camels, followed
by two tandem teams of horses driven
by smartly-gowned equestriennes. The
parade was divided into four sections,
the last Including the Rdman racing
chariots, open cages of tigers and
lions,, performing ponies, and the
clowns. Thirty-four beautiful gray
horses, showily caparisoned, carried as
lijanyx musicians forming a mounted,
—^military brass band which was loudly
cheered by the crowd.
One of the clowns had plenty of fun
with the Merry Widow hats along the
way. He wore a tam-o’-shanter, and
every time he saw a cartwheel crea
tion he had sortie comment, and this
was the cue for the band of clowns to
strike up the “Merry Widow” waltz,
and the wearer of the Merry Widow
usually tried to avoid the laughter of
the crowd by walking away.
Ar_an early hour this morning the
circus arrived, big crowds watched the
men peg the big tents and get the
grounds in shape for the throngs of
patrons expected during the day.
At the afternoon performance the
doors were opened a little ahead of
time in order to avoid a crush as the
crowd began assembling before noon.
Inside the spacious tents all was order
and discipline. The menagerie con
tains many rarely interesting features,
chief among the many are the three
monstrous giraffes, which in point of
attractiveness shared honors with
Baby [Elephant. ,
The* opening number described as
“The Grand Tournament," a glorious,
illuminated page from ancient history,
introducing 400 historical characters
^correctly costumed representing Egyp
tians, Phoenicians, Africans, Arabians,
Abyssinian?; together with mounted
guards, heralds, charioteers, knights,
nobles, high priests, foot soldiers,
archers, warriors, dancing girls, slaves,
servitors, horses, sacred beasts, trained
animals and triumphal cars and floats.
This brilliantly irridescent pageant was
quickly followed by three herds of
trained elephants, performing impossi
ble figures In their rings, which in turn
gave way to the beautiful horses. Then
came the clowns, and such a shout of
hilarious merriment greeted the white
faced fun makers that they redoubled
their efforts to delight the crowds.
There will be a last performance to
night at 8 o’clock.
