Image credit and sourceChapel Square Mall belongs to a larger transformation of downtown New Haven. The collection follows the retail blocks, the new shopping environment and the records of its planning and opening. The mall, hotel, offices and department stores were components of a complex, so one date should not be used indiscriminately for all of them. Library and building-archive descriptions give a 1965 completion or building date, while Richard C. Lee’s papers preserve mall-opening photograph folders dated April 1967. Photographs of Malley’s and nearby streets supply the earlier chapter. A 1960 library record identifies the new store site before construction began on May 16; another records the former Malley’s at Chapel and Temple in January 1963. These images document a sequence of clearance and rebuilding. They should not be used to suggest that every block was empty or every former business unsuccessful before redevelopment. The undated NATCO interior postcard presents an indoor shopping environment as an attractive destination. Its library upload date is not the date of the scene. The postcard records presentation, not sales figures or the experience of every shopper. [ED076-S01] [ED076-S04] [ED076-S05]
The surviving plan reference in Yale’s RU 685 collection is an acquisition lead, while the Lee opening photographs are separately cataloged records. These sources can connect design intentions with a public event, but the underlying plans and opening images have not all been reproduced here. The New Haven Building Archive adds a later architectural record. Together they support a story of urban change whose different viewpoints—planners, businesses, shoppers and displaced occupants—need to be investigated rather than assumed.
