Executive history
This directory follows several forms of mental health care across the two historical counties. The institutions have separate identities and founding dates. Each profile supplies a location, known earlier uses and source links so that research can proceed at the level of a particular institution. [MI-009]
Westport’s private institutions adapted older properties for care. Silver Hill’s history records a 1931 opening followed by nonprofit incorporation in 1934. New Haven’s Connecticut Mental Health Center opened in 1966 through a state–Yale partnership, representing a later community-based model. [MI-012]
Institutional histories and building photographs provide context; they do not constitute patient registers. This edition begins with public descriptions and source leads. Newtown · Fairfield County. Newtown’s former state psychiatric hospital was planned with physician Roy Lathen Leak and architect Walter P. Crabtree. The historical society holds planning material and an album showing the hospital in use. Its photographs require careful dating: the archive includes dated 1945 winter views and undated summer views.
Classification: Former state psychiatric hospital. Earlier use: A purpose-built hospital campus is documented by the planning archive. Earlier land ownership and land uses were not established in the opened primary sources. Exact dates reported in secondary source citing State Library; primary date page unavailable. Primary verification of exact admissions and closing dates remains incomplete; distinguish the 1931 cornerstone from patient admission in 1933. Operating-era scans are external reference links because the society declares all rights reserved. No patient dossiers, treatment photographs, or identifiable patient records have been collected.
Westport · Fairfield County. Dr. Frederick D. Ruland opened the institution in 1891. The museum documents treatment for mental illness and addiction. The estate later became parkland after demolition in the 1970s.
Classification: Former private psychiatric and addiction institution. Earlier use: Richard Henry Winslow’s Compo House, built in 1853, was a private residence before conversion. Museum history; exact closing year not specified. Exact final admissions, closure, and demolition dates are not resolved. Do not confuse this property with Hall-Brooke on Long Lots Road.

Hall-Brooke Hospital / McFarland’s Sanitarium
Westport · Fairfield County. Dr. David Walter McFarland’s private institution treated mental illness and addiction. Hall-Brooke was its successor. The current Shores service at 47 Long Lots Road remains a psychiatric-care campus within St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
Classification: Private psychiatric institution with continuing psychiatric campus. Earlier use: Early pre-sanitarium property use was not established. Replacement hospital construction superseded older campus buildings. Institution and continuity verified; exact renaming dates unresolved. The museum’s date arithmetic is inconsistent; its explicit 1898 date should be described as reported. Do not repeat the museum’s misleading trauma-center characterization of the Westport psychiatric campus.

Silver Hill Hospital
New Canaan · Fairfield County. John Millet founded Silver Hill with William Terhune and nurse Elvira Parsons. The hospital opened in 1931 and incorporated as a nonprofit in 1934. Later changes included a chapel in 1962 and an adolescent program in 1970. Its campus continues psychiatric and addiction care.
Classification: Private nonprofit psychiatric hospital. Earlier use: The founding name “Silver Hill Inn” described the approach to patient hospitality; it does not establish that the institution had previously operated as an ordinary hotel. Earlier uses of individual acquired houses are not established here. Hospital’s own history; current operation checked September 2026. Connecticut Mental Health Center
New Haven · New Haven County. The center opened in 1966 as a state–Yale partnership in New Haven’s Hill neighborhood. Its urban community setting represents a different institutional model from the large state hospital campus. The building archive records an addition in 1992.
Classification: Community mental health center, research and teaching institution. Earlier use: Residential houses occupied the site before the purpose-built center, according to Yale’s building archive. Foundation and Yale sources agree. Label it a community mental health center, not a nineteenth-century asylum. Building photographs are reference links; an open reuse license was not identified.

Yale Psychiatric Institute / Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital
New Haven · New Haven County. Yale New Haven Hospital identifies its psychiatric hospital as the former Yale Psychiatric Institute. The current inpatient facility is at 184 Liberty Street. Yale’s department history also documents the institute’s building designed by Frank Gehry.
Classification: Specialist psychiatric teaching hospital. Earlier use: The present psychiatric hospital is the former Yale Psychiatric Institute. Earlier site uses were not established. Identity and successor relationship verified; exact original founding date unresolved. Do not apply the general hospital’s 1826 founding or its 1833 building date to the psychiatric institute.
