A photographic history with cited opening dates, collection history and individually credited images. Historic views, later photographs and illustrations are dated separately. This is a selected collection, not an exhaustive inventory.
A sculptural punch bowl, ladle and matching cups show how silverplate became a centerpiece for celebration. This period engraving credits Middletown Plate Co.; it is an illustration published for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, not a photograph.
Image credit and sourceMiddletown’s silver industry put factory skill onto the dining table. Tea services, pitchers, baskets and other plated wares offered elaborate forms and bright surfaces for domestic display. The 1884 county history traces Edward Payne’s business to 1863; later industry histories give 1864. The difference is retained here rather than turning a disputed year into a precise opening day. The names stamped on surviving pieces can conceal a major change. Middletown Plate Company became part of the International Silver consolidation, and its operations moved to Meriden in 1899. The later Middletown Silver Company was a separate enterprise formed by people who stayed behind. A piece marked ‘Middletown’ therefore needs its complete maker’s mark and date before it can be attached to one company’s story. [SGC103-S2]
The period catalogs reveal the variety of the business, while museum photographs let visitors study surviving objects. Handles, lids, ornament and the shapes of individual vessels turn a company name into something tangible. The linked SFO Museum gallery includes maker identifications that allow Middletown and Meriden products to be compared.
