Peschell’s Bakery

Collection history

Peschell’s Pastry Shop supplied Campbell Avenue customers with Italian breads, hard rolls, cannoli, and holiday sweets. In a January 2013 interview, Harry M. Peschell said his father opened the shop in 1946 at a location across the street from its later premises. He remembered beginning work at fourteen and spending nearly his entire working life there, apart from Navy service. [WHPB-001]

The bakery was part of a neighborhood trade in which competitors could also be friends. A retrospective about Wolfe’s Bakery recalls the Wolfe family sending flowers and an offer of help when Peschell’s opened nearby. The article says the two businesses continued helping one another. It dates that opening to 1941, a conflict with the proprietor’s 1946 account that the archive preserves rather than silently combining. [WHPB-004]

Peschell’s name also traveled onto the baseball field. Contemporary sports coverage identifies Peschell’s Bakery as a West Haven Twilight League team, with a July 2000 report following its pursuit of a tournament berth. A 2009 report describes A-Plus Plumbing as the team formerly called Peschell’s Bakery. NBC Connecticut reported the bakery’s closure on January 30, 2013, describing a 67-year run and the family’s decision to retire amid a changing business climate. This report is contemporary with the event. A funeral-home obituary republished in 2018 instead says the business began in 1950 and operated until 2014. Harold M. Peschell’s 2018 obituary places the bakery within a larger life of civic service. It records Italian- and Irishman-of-the-Year honors, a Citizen-of-the-Year award, and sponsorship of West Haven sports. These tributes explain why a neighborhood bakery remained a recognizable community name after the storefront closed. By 2025, reporting on the opening of Gusto Bakery still used Peschell’s as a point of reference for local memories of fresh bread and pastry. That article also noted a Guatemalan bakery in the former Peschell’s building. The old name’s continued appearance in discussions of new businesses shows its enduring place in West Haven’s food history without implying that Peschell’s itself had reopened. [WHPB-007]

The bakery’s history can be followed through business records and the memories of people who bought or made its products. A reported founding date needs to remain tied to its source, while later photographs can establish a storefront or event at a particular time. A business name alone does not prove that every image of a bakery belongs to Peschell’s. The surviving record invites questions about production, family work, delivery and neighborhood routines. When those details are not documented, they should remain research questions. Oral histories and original advertisements could give the collection a richer account of everyday work without turning nostalgic recollection into an unsupported chronology.
