The people behind the place.

Louis D. Conley, whose family made its fortune in tin foil, established Outpost Farm in Ridgefield. The estate developed into a major nursery during the 1920s and 1930s. Ridgefield Historical Society treats its plantings and former residents as part of the history of the present park landscape. [CT074-S01] [CT074-S02]

The mansion was demolished in 1974 after the property passed to IBM. Later development proposals prompted a land-preservation campaign, and Bennett’s Pond State Park was created in 2002. The surviving landscape can be read as several overlapping places: estate, nursery and conserved land. [CT074-S01] [CT074-S02]

Outpost Farm's development as an estate and major nursery connects the present landscape with Louis D. Conley's family wealth and the work of cultivating plants. A wooded or garden view may contain traces of deliberate planting that are not obvious without historical records. The 1920s–1930s nursery chapter is therefore as important as the former mansion. The mansion's 1974 demolition, IBM ownership and later development proposals preceded the campaign that led to the state park in 2002. Each phase placed a different value on the land. Historical photographs and maps can help locate structures and plantings now absorbed into a changed setting. Conservation did not erase the estate and commercial-nursery past; it created another layer of stewardship.
