The people behind the place.

Bridgeport Hospital’s official timeline dates incorporation to March 15, 1878. P. T. Barnum served as its first president, and Susan Hubbell contributed land and money. Groundbreaking followed in 1883, with the first patients arriving on November 12, 1884. The nursing school also dates to 1884. These milestones describe the interval between creating an organization, constructing its premises and beginning care. [ED082-S01]

A postcard dated approximately 1910–1919 presents the hospital in a later period. It does not depict incorporation or establish the exact date of any building’s opening. As a visual source, it can be compared with the official chronology to ask how an institution represented itself after its early years. Its caption and repository record should remain attached to the image, especially where a publication or mailing date differs from the exposure date. [ED082-S02]

A separately identified St. Vincent’s postcard broadens the city’s hospital image record. It is not a view of Bridgeport Hospital and should not inherit that institution’s founding dates, leadership or nursing-school history. A fuller Saint Vincent’s chronology requires its own original reports and institutional records. Keeping that gap visible makes the collection useful without inventing a merged history of two separate hospitals. [ED082-S03]

Together these records connect civic philanthropy, nursing and the built environment. Barnum’s hospital role can be studied alongside his other Bridgeport activities, but it should not overshadow Hubbell’s contribution or the people who performed daily care. A future investigation can compare the official timeline with early annual reports and testimony from nurses and patients.
