Broad Street Cemetery holds names from Meriden’s eighteenth- and nineteenth-century life. The indexed burial of Thankful Ackley, who died in 1771, reaches back before the Revolution. A date on a surviving marker or in a later index does not by itself establish a formal dedication day, so the opening line preserves what the record actually supports. [SGC98-S3]
The Hale survey gives the cemetery a second life on paper. Recorded inscriptions preserve names and wording that weathering can make harder to read today. The online transcriber explains that the text has passed through several stages of copying and OCR. That makes a photograph of a stone especially valuable: it lets a visitor compare a name, age or date with the transcription instead of assuming every typed character is correct. [SGC98-S1]
The Patriots memorial draws attention to Revolutionary-era service, while the surrounding graves preserve a broader community of family relationships and losses. The external photographic album offers many close views of individual stones. Alongside the included cemetery view, these linked photographs make the collection useful for looking carefully as well as searching names. This is Meriden’s Broad Street Cemetery; similarly named burial grounds elsewhere are separate places. [SGC98-S4]
