The people behind the place.

The building at 222 Boston Post Road stood between Atwood Place and Taft Avenue in Allingtown. The correct business spelling is Carroll Cut-Rate Furniture. Reporting at its 2014 closing traced the enterprise to a perfume operation begun by Samuel Benjamin and relatives in 1926. Furniture sales began in 1952. The often-repeated 88-year lifespan counted the predecessor business; it should not be used to say the furniture store opened in 1926. [ED079-S01]

The 2014 sale and closing campaign ended a long retail chapter. Exterior and interior photographs preserve parts of the building during that transition. They can be read for visible arrangement and signage, but do not identify every worker, customer or stock item. A later photograph’s caption must not supply an earlier operating date merely because the building was familiar to generations of residents. [ED079-S01] [ED079-S02]

The transition was not one demolition event. On February 9, 2015 part of the building collapsed during removal of a loading dock. Full demolition was reported underway in November 2015. Mike Franzman’s March photo essay uses an imprecise demolition caption, so it cannot establish that the entire building had already been removed by March. Keeping the contemporary reports beside the images resolves the apparent sequence without silently changing a source. [ED079-S02] [ED079-S03] [ED079-S04]

In 2017 West Haven described the completed Atwood development at the former site. The change connects an industrial origin, furniture retail and later residential-commercial redevelopment. Each use belongs to the property’s history, while the family business and the replacement development remain distinct. Company records and oral histories would be needed for a fuller account of the store’s daily work and customer relationships. [ED079-S05]
