The people behind the place.

Construction of the Coliseum began in 1968, according to the New Haven Building Archive. The arena opened in 1972, designed by Kevin Roche / Roche Dinkeloo with an elevated parking structure. That combination joined the gathering space with the infrastructure needed to bring large audiences into downtown. Aerial and exterior records explain the building’s unusual organization, while an interior prepared for a concert reveals a different scale of use. [ED077-S01]

Performance photographs bring the building’s cultural life into view. Their creator, concert identification and date matter as much as their subject. A scan uploaded decades later should not acquire the upload year as the performance date. The selected open-license photographs remain credited to their photographers. They document particular performers and occasions rather than a complete concert calendar or the experiences of every audience member. [ED077-S02] [ED077-S03]

The venue closed in 2002. Demolition was a later sequence, culminating in the January 20, 2007 implosion of the remaining structure. The dated photographs show a standing structure on the morning of demolition, its collapse and the approaching dust cloud. These are separate moments within one event, not interchangeable views. They can be compared with the operating-era architectural images to identify both physical loss and the different purposes of the cameras. [ED077-S01] [ED077-S04]

The building’s ending did not end its place in memory. An oral-history catalog can point toward accounts of downtown decision-making, but a catalog entry does not substitute for listening to the interview. Documentary photographs establish visible events; claims about economic success, public controversy or the best future for the site require additional records and multiple viewpoints.
