Norwalk Hospital’s Woman’s Board history begins with corporators organizing on November 22, 1892. A supporting women’s board formed early in 1893, and the Merritt House at 24 Leonard Street was rented that June. The account describes six beds on the second floor and thirty-one patients during the first year. These details distinguish organization from the beginning of care and give the early institution a domestic scale. [ED083-S01]

The women’s board is part of the hospital’s institutional history, not simply a footnote to its buildings. Its account provides evidence of support and organization, while also representing the organization’s own memory. A period annual report or contemporary newspaper account would allow those details to be independently compared. The early-twentieth-century postcard and the 2007 photograph show different periods of the hospital’s built environment. The postcard should not automatically be labeled the original Merritt House. Its approximate date and weaker provenance are retained, while the later photograph has a specific capture date. Comparing the two can reveal a change of scale without inventing the construction history of every visible wing. [ED083-S03]

The story can therefore be taught through three linked subjects: the organization of a community service, the people who supported it and the buildings through which it expanded. Photographs show exterior form, while reports and patient or staff accounts are needed for the experience of care.
