Historic postcards, a stereoscopic photograph and an 1861 hotel menu follow the shoreline from resort grounds to crowded amusement streets.
The City of West Haven distinguishes the older resort from Savin Rock Park Co.’s 1925 opening. It gives September 21, 1966 as the formal park closure; individual concessions and demolition followed different dates.

The printed moon, bright signs and crowded amusement frontage make Beach Street into a nighttime destination. This is a colored linen postcard, not an unaltered color photograph. It records how Savin Rock was pictured and sold to visitors.

Two near-matching photographs were designed for a stereoscope, which gave the viewer a sense of depth. The paired print preserves an earlier way of experiencing a place at a distance. Its repository description and date range accompany the image in the catalog.

The date, proprietor and Yale class reference turn this menu into more than a list of dishes. It places a particular gathering at the hotel on July 19, 1861. Read the typography and small hotel engraving together as evidence of how the resort presented its hospitality.

Savin Rock grew through several stages. The City of West Haven begins its resort chronology with Savin Rock House in 1838 and dates the later corporate amusement park opening to Memorial Day 1925. These dates describe different places in the same shoreline story, rather than competing answers to one founding-day question. [SR-012]
The surviving July 19, 1861 bill of fare names proprietor E. A. Upson and records a jubilee meal for Yale’s Class of ’63. The printed menu and its hotel engraving offer a view of the resort before the major amusement rides. An undated grounds illustration is a separate object and should not inherit the menu’s date. Transport and entertainment developed together. The American Antiquarian Society describes ferry boats and horse-drawn cars bringing visitors in the 1870s. CTHumanities connects George Kelsey’s transport investments with a long pier, a hotel and expanding amusements. The waiting-station postcard gives that movement of visitors a visible setting. CTHumanities records a damaging electrical fire in 1932 and the loss of the large pier in the 1938 hurricane. The later redevelopment unfolded over years. The city gives September 21, 1966 as formal closure, while local recollections describe concession clearances in 1965 and demolition in 1967. Those sources preserve different stages of the shoreline’s transformation. [SR-014]
The hotel, transport connections and later corporate amusement park belong to a long sequence of seaside leisure. The early menu records a particular gathering before the better-known rides, while waiting-station postcards show the infrastructure that carried visitors to the shore. Fires, the hurricane and redevelopment later changed different parts of the destination at different times. Photographs of crowds and amusements should therefore retain the names and dates of the attractions they actually show. Savin Rock’s story includes workers, proprietors, travelers and neighboring residents as well as famous rides. Newspapers, business records and personal accounts are needed to recover those experiences alongside the highly promotional visual record. [SR-012] [SR-011] [SR-010]
